A Qu'ran printed in 1303 in Granada, Spain in
ornate Andalusian maghribi script. The Andalusian maghribi style was
influenced by the styles of script which were current in North Africa, Muslim
Spain and other parts of Africa. The art of this type of calligraphy developed
equally in the northern parts of Muslim Spain as well in Andalusia, Cordoba,
Toledo, Granada and Murcia. The style of Andalusian maghribi script is rounded
and easily recognizable. It is distinguishable by its compact projections along
the horizontal line, with narrow spaces left between words.

The Muslims of the Iberian Peninsula, who ruled Spain between 711 and 1492
C.E., called the area 'Andalus' which in the early period of the reign also
included Portugal and southern France. The word Andalusia is derived from the
Arabic word Al-Andalus which has several meanings. One of them is ‘to become
green after a long summer or drought,’ and the history of the Iberian
Peninsula over the ages attests to this enrichment when Muslims nurtured the up
until then turbulent Spain under the constant siege of the Huns and regional
strife.
